“After him came Nehemiah, son of Azbuk, mayor of half the district of Beth Zur. He worked from just in front of the Tomb of David as far as the Pool and the House of Heroes.” – Nehemiah 3:16
What makes a hero? The dictionary says that a hero is “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” When Tony Stark said, “I am Iron Man” and snapped his fingers defiantly, knowing it would cost his life, I admit, I cried. When the arrogant Son of Odin humbly gave up his life to save his friends fighting an enemy he could not win against…and then was brought back as the mighty Thor…it hit me in the feels. I’ll never forget the “98-pound-gerbil” Steve Rogers jumping on what he thought was a live grenade to shield his ungrateful and critical cohorts, it still makes me choke-up.
I’ve loved superheroes all my life. Somewhere, deep in the heart, there is a principle that drives the best out of us and into us. We were created by Him, in His image. When we see something – even something we’ve suspended our belief for – that echoes this deep truth, we’re inspired and we are stirred. This is because all of these heroes reflect this one deep principle exemplified in real life by Jesus Christ, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:3) Jesus Christ is the greatest hero the world has ever known. Christ is rightly admired and idealized because his death as an innocent man on the cross for us proves his courage and nobility. His resurrection from the dead is his crowning achievement as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords! Will you take up the challenge to become like him, carrying the cross and becoming the hero you are destined to become?
